Kode9, the pioneering force behind Hyperdub, has spent the last two decades shaping the landscape of electronic music. From launching careers of groundbreaking artists like Burial, DJ Rashad and Loraine James to curating his own distinct sound, he’s remained at the forefront of innovation. In this interview, Kode9 shares insights into his creative process, the ethos of Hyperdub, and his reflections on the global underground music scene.
Hyperdub has become synonymous with pushing boundaries. When asked about his approach to embracing new genres, Kode9 reveals a spontaneous yet purposeful process:
“Sometimes I get bored and just need a change, an influx of new sounds, a breath of fresh air or a new challenge.”
Hyperdub’s future promises more trailblazing projects, with exciting albums lined up for release. This philosophy of embracing change has kept the label at the cutting edge of electronic music, continually redefining what’s possible within the genre. Reflecting on the label’s ethos, Kode9 emphasizes his commitment to nurturing unique talent:
“I’ve just tried to provide a platform for artists charting their own paths, perhaps at the peripheries of their scenes, but with a unique vision within their own world.”
Balancing his role as a mentor with his own creative pursuits has been a challenge, but it’s one that Kode9 approaches with dedication and passion, and justifies why Hyperdub today has the reputation it has.
Kode9’s musical journey is one of constant evolution. His sets traverse genres, blending dubstep, footwork, jungle, and more. Despite this eclecticism, he sees a unifying thread:
“To be honest, despite being different genres, I see these as all variations on a theme of music that revolves around sub bass and hyper rhythm.”
This ethos not only defines his DJ sets but also informs his production work. Kode9’s ability to seamlessly incorporate a wide array of influences while staying true to this core theme demonstrates his mastery in crafting an immersive sonic experience. This sonic focus is a reflection of the dynamic and diversity of his music in his DJ sets but also the wider artists that sit within the Hyperdub ecosystem.
Having played in cities across Southeast Asia, Kode9 shares his admiration for the region’s underground music scene:
“Ive had a lot of great experiences playing in East Asia over the last 15 years, with also some interesting visits to play in Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. I have fond experiences of my last time in Bangkok - it always surprises me when I’m so far from home and yet you meet musical allies. That’s why I love this job.
The South East Asian region and cities like Bangkok play a crucial role in the global exchange of underground music, fostering connections that transcend borders. These experiences fuel Kode9’s belief in the universal language of music and its ability to unite diverse communities.
As Hyperdub celebrates its 20th anniversary, Kode9 is looking ahead to new projects. From collaborative singles to a potential solo album, the next chapter promises more innovation:
“What I really want to do is make a new solo album. I just need to find the time to do it.”
With plans to return to the studio, Kode9 continues to balance his roles as a label head, DJ, producer, and writer, ensuring his legacy as a pioneering figure in electronic music remains as dynamic as ever.
