Seven Bells Knocking w/ Andy Rantzen & DZ GAS - 19th May 2026 | Bangkok Community Radio

"May Bells guest: Andy Rantzen Some guests we introduce. Some we clear a path for. Sydney-based, psychologist by training, ARIA winner, and one of the quiet architects of Australian electronic music since the early 90s. Scratch-E to Paul Mac's Itch-E, his fingerprints sit across rave, dub, ambient and post-punk from three decades of Aussie underground. Itch-E and Scratch-E formed in Sydney in 1991, and their 1994 single Sweetness and Light dragged the warehouse scene into daylight. It took the inaugural ARIA for Best Dance Release in 1995, the one with Mac's now-legendary thank-you to Sydney's ecstasy dealers live on air. Thirty years later, In the Mix put it at number 1 on its 100 Greatest Australian Dance Tracks of All Time. Before Itch-E there was Wrong Kind of Stone Age (Sydney post-punk, dub-heavy, didgeridoo and electronic noise) and Pelican Daughters with Justin Brandis (ambient/industrial, Silent Records, four decades and counting). After, and around, and since: Cherry2000, fc europa, Event Horizon, ongoing work with Sheriff Lindo, Jochen Gutsch, Hinterlandt, Nancy Valentine, and Ryan Spinoglio. With Mac, also Boo Boo & Mace and Screensaver. Remixes for Severed Heads and The Wiggles, in roughly equal measure. Solo, start with The Blue Hour (2001) and follow the thread through The Master Drummer, The Factory Of Unhappiness, Rainbow Visions Of The Apocalypse. Melbourne's Efficient Space did the reissue legwork. Will I Dream? and the 1/66 dubs sit somewhere between 80s digital reggae, 90s rave and whatever's coming next - essential. Pelican Daughters drop a new LP on Se Dessaisir Publishing, the imprint World Of Echo called ""a truly modern collection of post-industrial minimalist electronics"" on their last outing, sitting between O Yuki Conjugate's greyscale ambience, fourth world disorientation, and post-Cologne dub minimalism. And Rantzen & Spinoglio, the live electro/techno duo Andy's been running with Ryan Spinoglio since 2003, have a double vinyl landing on Ominous Systems later this year. Both are worth tracking. Dub's patience, rave's optimism, a lo-fi hand on the faders. Underground before the word had a marketing budget. Heavy, odd, drifty, weird."
